Our staff members have such a wide variety of backgrounds and unique personalities. From working VO actors starring in movies, videogames and national TV commercial campaigns, to producers spending their days working on voice-over demos as well as broadcast voice-over work, to copywriters, casting directors and many other industry skills in between! We genuinely love bringing our expertise and our experiences together to create the best programs for our students.
For the second spotlight in this series, we’d like to introduce you to one of Such A Voice’s personal coaches, Nancy Wilson.
Who is Nancy Wilson? I am a radio-nerd in the sense that from the time I was 10 years old I was pretending to spin records and back sell them. I worked in LA broadcasting from the time I was 18 — in TV production and engineering…then made an unusual decision and decided I wanted to use my voice…so I got into radio. The engineering skills I got from working in TV really helped in radio. But I had to work in some tiny towns before making it back into LA in front of the mic. I wound up as a staff announcer at 94.7 KTWV The Wave in Los Angeles for ten years. Was called back periodically after that.
Probably my biggest love is nature. I moved to North Idaho for a few years and did environmental reporting for NPR stations. My favorite story I covered was when I traveled to the Nez Perce reservation to interview one of the elders about wolf re-introduction in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. The Nez Perce were the first tribe to take on the responsibility of re-establishing an endangered species. It was a magical time in my life, for sure.
How long have you been doing voiceover and how did you get started? I thought I was doing voice-over all along since I was using my voice 🙂 in radio. But learned that voice-over is very different from what I was doing. So I got into acting and worked my way into voice-over about 13 years ago.
Who is someone you really admire? Sylvia Earle “Her Deepness.” She is the Jane Goodall of the ocean.
If you could go back in time, what year would you travel to and why? The mid to late 1800’s. I love the old west.
What was your favorite voice-over job? I’ve done lots of different types but when I booked the role of “mom” in the SAG/AFTRA Radio play Father Knows Best, that really was a high.
Have you ever done any on-camera work? Yes and I love it.
What are you known for in your group of friends? Intensity.
